What can stress cannabis plants?

There are many situations that can put your cannabis plant under stress. So what are the causes and how can you protect your cannabis seeds and seedlings?

cannabis plants and stress problems

Stress in cannabis plants is in most cases caused by chemical imbalances. Whatever the cause at a given moment, stress derails the plant from its normal pace and this will naturally provoke a reaction that you will certainly not miss.

Cannabis plants like a stable and pleasant environment. If you want to change the surroundings of your plant in any way, do it judiciously.

Main causes of stress in cannabis plants

1. Water

Whether you give your plant more or less water, its leaves will wither. In case of excessive water, the leaves will have a solid structure and their ends will bend downwards or towards the stem. On the contrary, when there is not enough water, they will have a classic wilted nature and will be dry to the touch.

2. Nutrition problems

cannabis leafs and nutrition problemsThe cannabis plant begins to show signs of stress with both high and low doses of important nutrients. There is a disproportion of minerals that prevent the plant from functioning normally. Common signs of this type of stress are yellow or brown leaf tips, yellow and otherwise colored spots on the leaves, falling off leaves and overall growth retardation.

3. pH in a root system

The pH value determines how basic or acidic a given substance is. In order for the plant to get all the necessary nutrients, the roots must be in an environment where the pH is suitable. When the pH is poor, the roots do not absorb the necessary nutrients and the plant then begins to show signs of stress. Therefore, always make sure that the pH of your soil medium is OK. The value should be 6.0 – 7.0 pH.(close to 6 for a hydro, and 7 for a soil)

4. Irregular light cycles

cannabis leaf light burnThe cannabis plant needs at least 18 or more hours of light when it is in the vegetative phase and in the flowering phase it is the 12/12 cycle. These cycles should always be regular. It is important that the plant does not have access to light “at night” at all. If you do not follow these cycles, the plant could become a hermaphrodite. The stress caused by light can also dull the plant so much that it could affect the size of your future crop. Autoflowering strains ignore those periods, so you cannot stress them with light.

5. Damage to the cannabis plant

Mechanical damages like toping, pruning, taking clones or replanting ares form of stress etc. so for example avoid of pruning right after replanting.

6. Root problems

For example, bugs, physical damage, chemical damage and some types of bacteria damage the roots. They should have an environment where there is no shortage of oxygen, water and nutrition. We take the above-mentioned pH for granted. The roots should never experience excessive temperature fluctuations, otherwise they will not be able to process vital elements well. The room temperature is ideal for them and thanks to it you will avoid unpleasant experiences with bacteria or certain types of pests.

Above all, the soil medium should be well aerated and must not retain excess water. You don’t want to risk root rot or disease.

7. Environemtal extremes

The room should have a good supply of fresh air, ideal humidity and keep the ideal temperature without fluctuations.

When a plant feels bad in a given environment, it results in a slowdown in growth, which is the first phase in which it tries to adapt to the given environment (usually it manages to do so). In the second phase, when the conditions in the environment begin to deteriorate, you begin to notice the physical manifestations of stress on the plant.

What to say at the end?

Every grower has experienced stress on the cannabis plant. It is important that you learn from previous mistakes and not repeat them next time.
