Simple tutorial on how to clean a cannabis grinder
Not everyone can afford to buy a new grinder if they get it dirty, and in this article you can read how to clean your cannabis grinder easily at home.
We often get tired of cleaning our grinders of sticky gunk and decide to dispose of them. However, there is an easy way to revive the grinder and get back the plant material that is stuck on it.
This complete guide to cleaning a grinder will help you save time and money!
When to clean the marijuana grinder
The habit of cleaning the grinder depends on how and how often you use it. If you use a fine kief as an accessory or in a bong, you will definitely need to clean it once a week.
On the other hand, if you don’t shred as often and use coarse leaves in your joints (because they create a consistent burn), you can clean your grinder once a month.
Basically, if your grinder makes a squeaky sound when you turn it and there are hardened deposits of sticky plant matter on its base, it needs to be cleaned.
Frost cleaning – How to save your kif?
Before rescuing cannabis, place the soiled grinder in the freezer for 15 to 30 minutes. This will make the cannabis trichomes brittle and easier to scrape. After freezing, disassemble the herb grinder, clean the buildup from each piece of the grinder with a toothbrush or toothpick, and collect the scrabs full of cannabinoids on a rolling tray – so you can enjoy it later. This cleaning can be used on any type of grinder. The disadvantage to this procedure is that you have to work really fast or use dry ice.
Oil cleaning – the easiest way
There is also the option of cleaning a dirty cannabis grinder with vegetable oil. It’s quite simple and if you use a good quality oil, this cleaned material can be used as cannabis oil. Take the grinder apart and pour the oil over the entire area to be cleaned. Leave the oil for 30 minutes and then brush off any unwanted plant material with a toothbrush or interdental brush. Afterwards, clean the scrubber with a solvent or dishwashing liquid and water. Simply with any degreasing agent. Then wash it with clean water, dry it and you’re done.
This cleaning can be used on any type of grinder.
Cleaning via solvent for various grinders
The cleaning method varies according to the type of grinder used. For acrylic and plastic grinders, you only need to use warm water or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Acrylic grinders will melt and plastic ones will warp if the water is too hot.
For metal grinders, however, use a mixture of coarse salt and isopropyl alcohol (pure alcohol) or plain boiling water. The following steps are ideal for metal grinders only.
Cleaning procedure for metal cannabis grinders
Before immersing the grinder parts in isopropyl alcohol, wash them thoroughly with hot water (ideally with dishwashing liquid) and wipe dry. This will ensure that you don’t have to replace the alcohol solution too often.
Fill a zip-lock or plastic bag with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt and add only the parts that need cleaning (usually the grinding wheel, kief catcher and mesh).
If the parts are not well immersed, shake them every 10 minutes.
Depending on how dirty the grinder is and how much dirt has settled in the crevices and threads, leave it soaked for 20 minutes to an hour (several hours for deep cleaning).
Clean any remaining dirt with a nylon brush and dry each part with a paper towel.
Assemble the parts and your sparkling clean grinder is ready for the next use!
Cleaning procedure for acrylic or plastic cannabis grinders
For cleaning acrylic and plastic cannabis grinder you can use the procedure described above using oil which is the most gentle and the oil can also be used for cooking for example 🙂 You can also use vinegar and soda, but all the material will be degraded.
