Cannabis Honey recipe

Like CBD oil, hemp honey is a simple herbal remedy that you can make yourself at home. The process starts by first activating the plant’s beneficial substances with heat and then pouring honey over the activated plant substances. After that, you can use it like any other plant honey. It tastes deliciously of caramel, pine and citrus and goes well on a spoon in tea or on toasted sourdough bread.

What is it?

Cannabis honey is made by infusing cannabis into honey under gentle heat. It has anti-inflammatory properties and combines the collective benefits of cannabis and honey. It’s also easy to make and has a strikingly sweet flavour with distinct herbal notes.

To make it at home, you need to follow a simple three-step process. First, heat the cannabis in a process called decarboxylation, which activates the herb’s beneficial compounds. Next, you mix the herb with honey and steep it in the honey under gentle heat. Finally, strain the honey and put it in a jar for storage.

What’s in it?

To make cannabis honey, you need two ingredients: Cannabis and honey. That’s it. I prefer to use a non-intoxicating strain with high cannabinoid content. In addition to these two ingredients, you can also add other herbs such as vanilla, rose, basil, thyme, rosemary or lavender. The combination of herbs can add flavour as well as beneficial botanical compounds.

Activate cannabinoids

The beneficial compounds in cannabis, such as CBD and THC, need to be activated for the body to utilise them. This activation process is called decarboxylation and requires heat.

To make the honey, you can activate your herb by baking it on a tray; however, using a precision cooker designed for cannabis use will activate a greater percentage of these beneficial compounds.

For this reason, we use and recommend the Ardent Fx, which is designed to efficiently activate these beneficial compounds. You can also use it to prepare infusions and baked goods. For people who regularly make cannabis infusions such as cannabis honey or oil or other edibles, it is worth the investment.

Tips for making cannabis-infused honey

Making cannabis-infused honey is easier than you think, and you need to follow three steps. First, activate the herb, then infuse it and finally strain it. However, there are a few tips you should keep in mind.

  • Choose strains with high cannabinoids content. While you can make a honey infusion with any cannabis strain
  • Use a high quality honey with a flavour you like. Look for raw, local honey when possible. Specialty honeys can add a lot of flavor to your batch, and wildflower and acacia honeys work well for this recipe.
  • Store it as you would any other honey. That is, you should store it at room temperature away from direct light and heat. Honey has an unlimited shelf life, but try to use infused honey within a couple of months.
  • Use it sparingly. Half a teaspoon to a full teaspoon is a good start.

Cannabis Honey Recipe

Sweet with undertones of pine and citrus, this cannabis honey recipe is easy to make and delivers delicious, herbal results. You can take it by the spoonful, drizzle it over desserts or stir it into tea.

Cook time 3hours

Ingredients :

  • 5 grams of decarbolised marijuana flowers
  • 1 cup honey

Equipment :

  • Ardent Flex (or similar precision cooker)
  • Fine mesh sieve

Instructions

  • Pour the honey over the dissolved cannabis, then stir to remove any air bubbles. Put the lid back on the brewer and then press the infusion button. Allow the brewer to run through the entire cycle and then cool completely.
  • Place a fine mesh strainer over the jar or pitcher and pour the infused honey into the jar. Press on the herbs with a wooden spoon to push as much honey as possible through the sieve. Discard the used herbs and close the jar with the honey.
  • Store the infused honey in a dark cupboard at room temperature, protected from light and heat, for up to 2 months.

Variations

Add additional herbs such as vanilla, chamomile, lavender, passion flower or rose. These herbs do not need to be activated by decarboxylation, so add them in the second step together with honey.

If you don’t like honey, you can also stir in other natural sweeteners like maple syrup using the same technique.

Make creamy (or whipped) cannabis honey by mixing the strained honey with an equal part of crystallised honey. Whisk the two together in a stand mixer until the mixture is light and creamy. Let it sit for two hours and then repeat the process twice more. Store the creamy honey in a jar at room temperature and whisk again if it separates.

General questions

Can I make it on the cooker?
Yes. To make cannabis honey on the cooker, you first need to decarboxylate the trim. Many people do this on a baking tray in a slow oven. Once decarboxylated, place it in a double boiler over boiling water. Let the herbs steep in the honey for about 45 minutes, then strain and store.

Does cannahoney get you high?
Yes. The effect depends on the variety of your cannabis or other added herbs/drugs.

How should it be stored?
Store honey at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.

Can I just buy it instead?
Many companies sell CBD honey in addition to other CBD products like oils and tinctures. Unfortunately, cannabis honey containing THC cannot be bought in countries where THC is not legal.

How do I use it?
Add a teaspoon of the honey to your bedtime tea or drizzle it over fresh fruit. You can also substitute cannabis and other herbal honey for regular honey in many recipes, and for recipes that require large amounts of honey, a mixture of herbal and regular honey is suitable.

The perfect variety for honey production is Nuka Cleopatra.
